At Ironfire we champion enduring, sustainable furnituRE
Quality is getting something right first time, much like our approach to sustainability, make it once to last a lifetime, our approach starts with the materials we choose and flows right the way through everything we do to ensure we have considered the impact at every step of our furniture’s very long life.
We all want an answer to climate change; the addiction to Fast Furniture is adding 22 million items of furniture to dumps. Included amongst this are recyclable materials which cannot easily be sorted.
Ironfire have been directly supplying a simple practical solution for years. We believe we are as close to net zero furniture as we can get. All our furniture is 100% recyclable but at 100% repairable there is no need to ever throw it away.
It’s not a perfect science and we can always improve.

Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 1. Materials
Careful material selection is vital to building a good quality long-lasting product however this should not be at detriment to other manufacturing factors.
Our Wood – We only FSC accredited certified renewable; high quality imported Whitewood (Spruce). This chosen solution has benefits which outweigh the British alternatives, utilising a larger company with the capacity to optimise their 4000 vehicles through fleet management systems, who are introducing the UK’s first electric curtain-sided HGV and actively trialling Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a replacement fuel for diesel vehicles (reducing carbon by up to 90% for those vehicles),the longer term benefits to the development of widespread ethical carbon reducing transportation methods are supported.
The Swedish timber producer is at the cutting edge of sustainability and actively work with local and global collaborations to contribute to, and drive sustainability issues; we felt that their ethos mirrored our own “Durability is not an extra layer. It must be present in everything we create, including both economic, ecological and social aspects. “
Our Steel – We only use galvanised steel that meets British Standard BS EN ISO 1461. That means it will have the best protection against rust. We only deal with well established, reputable steel producers and merchants and order it cut to our specification. Our metal components are all made on state of the art, energy efficient machines.
Our Soft Materials – Material for our waterproof cushions is made especially for us in Holland by a family firm. We use a filling that is made from spun recycled plastic bottles and is mould and fire resistant.
Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 2. Toxins and Processing
Iron-Fire avoid processing materials as much as possible, wood is a beautiful natural product with flaws, our products are not supposed to look uniform and we actively celebrate the flaws, that said we need to ensure the quality and robustness of our final piece.
Our Coatings – We use water-based paints and avoid anything that contains Volatile Organic Compounds. The paints we use are Sourced in the UK but made in Italy.
They provide a very high level of protection against fading and cracking outside. We use Fiddes Wax because we are assured of its ingredients, quality and provenance.
Our deliveries & packaging – Where viable we always deliver ourselves. This enables us to avoid disposable packaging, and plan our routes ensure the optimum fuels and time usage. When we have to we reuse packaging delivered to us, the added benefit of this is getting to meet our customers, and settling our furniture in your home.
Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 3. Supply Chain
Any independent external component can become a weakness, careful selection of suppliers and their values should only strengthen a business.
Our Suppliers – UK supply sources comply with UK employment and trading laws. We only deal with well established, reputable steel producers and merchants, we have a robust supply chain selection and vetting process any supply partners share a similar ethos to our own.
Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 4. Do no Harm; do good
As oppose to net zero impact; strive to achieve a net positive impact
Our choices – Where we can make choices over products that may have an impact such as packing, we choose recycled and biodegradable, we believe our furniture has net zero impact and are working to quantify this, the goal is to become net positive.
Our Community – Ironfire is hand-made in rural Wiltshire and any 3rd party manufacturing is done in the UK, supporting UK employment and industry.
Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 5. Minimal Waste
Reducing or eliminating the generation of harmful and persistent wastes supports efforts to promote a more sustainable society.
Our Waste – We have very little in terms of waste products from our manufacturing process, all pieces are made to order; processes have been designed to produce minimal waste, wood off cuts are reused for packaging wherever possible, any final remnants of wood are incinerated to provide heating locally.
Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 6. Recycling
The concept of recycling waste materials into new materials and objects is not new. This concept can include repurposing and includes the recovery of energy from the obsolete materials
Start of Life – everything within our process is recyclable, so anything not utilised within our manufacturing process is recycled.
End of Life – Should your table reach the end of its life and you decide it needs to be disposed of rather than repaired / sold on; every component is fully recyclable.
Our Seven Point Sustainable Approach – 7. Long Lasting and Repairable
Over 12 million tons of furnishings and furniture each year, because of the complexity and varying materials in many of the items—some recyclable and some not—over nine million tons of glass, fabric, metal, leather, and other materials
end up in landfills too.
Long life – We manufacture responsible, sustainable, environmentally friendly items that properly maintained should last a life time. We have successfully put our finishes through independent testing to simulate over 6 years of use outside without substantial degradation and we are waiting for final confirmation of the same achievement for UV fading. All our wood is primed, painted and lacquered to provide a lasting finish.
Our Spares – We keep replacement parts for all our products and design them so as to be easily changed and also offer a service to rework surfaces if you want a change of decor. We are always available for advice and to support everything we make.
